"If ever there was
a three-mug-morning
this would be it"
No other thought
entered his mind
while he was starring out
over the barren land
out to the horizon
where it met
the vast grey
and overcast sky
"Bleak
Is there a saint by that name?
if there is
this must be his day"
He turned towards
the coffee-maker
and only minutes later
he woke up

The sanctuary was hushed when he entered. Early morning light filtered through long-unwashed windows and faded curtains. He lifted up the sacred lid, poured the holy water into the opening, and reached for the sacramental basket, remembering to line it with filter paper of the finest provenance. He lovingly measured rich, earthy powder into the basket assembly. Then he poured milk into the ceremonial chalice, placed it on the altar, and pushed the button. Within seconds, he could hear the heavenly choir singing "drip, drip, drip."
Someday I may come face to face with god, if there is one, he though. For now, though, I will make do with coffee.

There was no need
for other thoughts

Thought: irrelevent.
Coffee pulsing through your veins
Is all that you need.

I remember reading through various books about the life of Beethoven that coffee houses were the hangouts of all the composers and all other creative people in Vienna.

...mmm!
I've long been of the opinion that the mild analgesic effect of coffee, making it sooo! much easier to start the day, accounts for its popularity even more than its mild stimulant effect.

It wasn't just Vienna. in the early 18th century, coffeehouses were also wildly popular in London! Alexander Pope spent a fair bit opf time in coffeehouses. It was only later that tea became the preferred drink of the British.

This morning I tried from Laos. It was brought to me by my beloved daughter. It was - erm - special, I think covers the experience best
Never before did I see black coffee of this blackness. It out-blacked the darkest night, I tell you!
I guess they put something in it to give it that particular colour.
And I don't think I will try it again
But as usual it was fun trying something completely new and different

I hear you, Pierce. Some years ago, I signed up for a program whereby four times a year I received special gourmet coffee varieties from different parts of the world. The only one I really liked was Paragua, which tasted a lot like French Roast. Well, French Roast itself is available almost everywhere, and at a fraction of the cost. I dropped that program after a year.

I understand your reason for leaving the program. I still like to try almost any kind of food and drink, but in my own time. A program like that would probably be too much for me

The program cost a lot, and didn't add to my enjoyment of drinking coffee.

I love coafe au lait the way the French serve it, sweet and milky and in a big bowl of a cup. Never could drink it black, and have always preferred tea. But I love the smell of the stuff.
Coffee houses were all over the lowland countries of Europe, and it was a major, prized commodity. Here's a book, The Coffee Traders by David Liss. Historical fiction.
