GBBF - Saturday 5th August
Posted Aug 7, 2000
The Great British Beer Festival was a combination of good and bad. The bad was that choice was severely limited as many of the beers had run out. The good was that there was room to breath and I met up with Pastey, Munchkin and Phil, real live researchers. It's quite an interesting experience meeting up with strangers who are not strangers and comforting to realise you get on as well IRL as on H2G2 , although alcohol does encourage a certain bonhomie in like mided people.
Despite the fact that it was all slightly more relaxed in terms of train travel (no running for the last train home), I think on balance I'll go back to evening sessions early in the week.

Boulogne II
Posted Jul 11, 2000
Well, it did rain, and they did cancel the battle on Sunday...but it was great fun anyway. We had a parade through Boulogne and a battle on Saturday and spent a long time posing round in uniform. Oh, and we also drank a lot of beer

Boulogne

It's raining, my kit bag is packed, I've got my saddle and sabre and tomorrow I go to Boulogne in France for a long weekend re-enacting and living under canvas. Hmmmm...I'm beginning to wonder if this is a good idea.

The Car Man
Posted Jul 5, 2000

Matthew Bourne has done it again with the latest production from the Adventures in Motion Pictures (AMP) dance company, who brought you the all male Swan Lake.
The Car Man uses new orchestrations of Bizet's score for Carmen to give us a story of heat and passion in small town America. The plot rattles along providing thrills, passion, humour and eroticism with a few unexpected twists. The set is skillfully evocative and the choreography uses it brilliantly. I was entertained from start to finish, my only regret being that with so much action at times I couldn't watch all the dancers at the same time. Perhaps a good excuse to go and see it again .

I go away to Portugal for a week and the day after I leave I get an e-mail telling me my historical re-enactment entry has been approved. And I wasn't even here to bask in the glory of it, oh well, keeps the feet on the ground I suppose .
