I've said something similar before, but so what... All he needs to do is position the car where he wants it to be, at the correct speed (I'm assuming that it's auto) and giving the correct signal (if appropriate). Being mindful of what's about.

PJ took his driving test yesterdayunfortunately he failed, the examiner told him that he'd not used his mirror before changing lanes on a dual carriageway ? (PJ said to me he had) and was too hesitant with a oncoming car ? As you know, your not supposed to flash headlights, as in saying "you first" etc,so PJ didn't and neither did the other carso PJ waited while the other car decided to move, this was classed as too hesitant by the examiner ?
he is now applying again for a second test

Actually I've been told people like and and the like - who tend to overthink things - have a tendency of failing their first attempt

I passed first time - mind you my skirt was a bit short and that was Er! some ***** years ago

Failing to use the mirror is a classic fail reason and one which is often contested, I did! I did! I did The trick here is to position the mirror slightly askew so that you have to move your head slightly to use it. Ideally the rear view mirror should exactly match the rear window so that you can use it by simply averting your eyes from the front, this is not always apparent to the examiner. you'll do it next time PJ
