Not as salacious as it sounds, I'm afraid.

WOW! Just plain wow... I so completely am this essay thing! Of course I got most of my knowledge of sex off the tv and internet, but I mean in general, understanding the theory from various sources. I have gotten to second base, but haven't hit third or home. Just wow... I fully understand the amount of sexual frustration you had cause I'm living in it! To add insult to injury my girlfriend is in Florida and I'm in Delaware, United States. To add further insult, I kind of dig a cute Christian girl, but I would never cheat on my girlfriend... So yeah, this is really good stuff! Cause I'm living it...
Side note: Left Hand of Darkness rocks! I had to read for English, great book!

Thanks. Thank you very much indeed.
It's never occured to me that this rather embarassing confession would strike a chord with other people. Even now I assume that my experience (or my awful lack of it) was freakish and unusual.
I guess it wasn't.
And yes - Left Hand of Darkness does rock.

I think everybody goes through something like that... Just depends on how long it takes them to snap out of it... Some people it doesn't take that long at all, but for those who have a tendency to think and feel seriously about life, it takes them longer...

My first reaction to this was 'Awhh how sweet'. My second reaction was the fact that it touches more realities in my life that I would like to admit it would.
It's touching entracing (not sure if that's a word) and terrifically written).

I think contary to what we might tell our friends we have all been through this.
It will touch a nerve with most people who read it.

I am genuinely surprised by the response this has had. It does seem to speak to people. Maybe more of us need validating than ever care to admit it.
I'll admit that the "how sweet" reaction makes me cringe a little, but I take your word for it Z that you had other reactions as well.
Not a bad booklist, but a list of bad books, perhaps?
Thanks again for reading and commenting.

Hi all,
This is a great read, and, yes, a touching personal account of the confusion and difficulty of knowing you think you want to be 'doing it' but feeling as though it's a million miles away from practical reality.
The block quote sections work really well, taking the reader 'off to one side' and conjuring up an image of the writer alone in the 'secure' universe of the written word, discovering and exploring the unattainable world of sexual experience in the only way that seems possible to so many sensitive young men and women at that time of life. They provide an effective contrast from the descriptions of a more 'external' life.
And I guess what I *really* like about this as a piece of writing is that it sets out the confusion and turmoil, carries the reader through an exploration of it, and then brings resolution. I like the simple sentences of the ending. Excellent.
Well, thanks for posting it here,
hope you find the experience of writing, posting and getting feedback a rewarding one,
and if so, look forward to reading more from you in the future

Just beautiful.
Have to confess that I've never read any of the books on your list. Except for Heinlein. I really dig Heinlein.

Thank you Spiff, and thank you Sneaky.
I put quite a bit of effort into the structure of the piece, and I keep on finding myself remembering things that I could have included in the reading lists but forgot. The Naked Civil Servant, for instance, was and remains an important book for me though for different reasons now than when I first read it. However it seems sensible to leave it as it is. I am wary of destroying the balance.
Sneaky - take a dip into some of the books there. They are all good, and you might enjoy. Particularly "The Left Hand of Darkness".
