It doesn't look like anyone else wants to play PBS.
Do you want to pose another brainteaser?

Given that it's been four weeks, and no-one else is playing, you might as well give us your answer Siwc.
Though, I tell you this, if one of my friends suddenly disappears, and another friend appear with some meat that he claims comes from an albetross, or a cormorant, or other such beast, then I would be deeply suspicious from the start.

On behlaf of PBS, the answer is:
The two friends had been shipwrecked for several weeks together, along with another friend who had died of starvation. The two surviving friends were starving to death as well, but had survived on 'Albatross Soup', at least so one of them had thought. It turns out that his friend had used the dead friend's corpse to make the soup and then told his mate it was Albatross Soup.
When they met up again to celebrate escaping, they ate Albatross Soup, just as they had when marooned. The friend realised that it didn't taste anything like what he had survived on. It then dawned on him that his friend had cooked the corpse and passed it off as Albatross Soup.

What is the longest common English word that can be written using only the top row of letter keys on a standard English typewriter (i.e. QWERTYUIOP)?

Can we have a clue, like 'what letter does it start with?'

is it possibly dermatoglyphics?
Nice brainteaser
PedanticBarSteward Posted Nov 22, 2005
I had it as “uncopyrightable”
However:
dermatoglyphics plural noun
1. the lines forming a skin pattern, esp on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
2. (functioning as singular) the study of such skin patterns
History: C20: from dermato- + Greek gluphe a carving; see glyph
seems to be a word thus making nonsense of my posting.
You'd better post a new poser.

sorry, only have access to the internet at work.
OK. My brainteaser for today:
A man leaves home, running. He runs a little way and turns left. He runs a little way and turns left again. He runs a little way and turns left a third time. He runs back towards home, when he sees two masked men waiting for him.
Q1: Who are the masked men?
Q2: Why was he running anyway?

Is this a baseball question? Being British I don't fully understand how a game of rounders came be made so complicated. I assume that he has hit a home run and is running around the bases. At the home base there is the catcher and umpire (or referee), both of whom have masks/helmets on.

It took me awhile 2, considering it's an American sport/passtime, and I'm from South Africa.

Re the 'Typewriter' puzzler.
My answer to this is 'perpetuity' - same number of letters, but lasts longer!

perpetuity repeats p and t, though.
Sheep was correct, it was a baseball question.

You have just poured yourself a cup of hot tea, when the phone goes. It is your boss, who wants to see you for 5 minutes. You haven't poured your milk yet. Should you pour the milk in now or wait until you return in 5 minutes, to ensure your tea is as hot as possible?
Assume that you do take milk in your tea, you cannot take the tea with you and the milk is cold.

And another thing: Is the five minutes a guaranteed five?

Geggs Posted Nov 24, 2005
I've just written a detailed answer to this, but then lost it due to server problems.
Can't be bothered to type it all out again.
But I do know that answer, honest I do.
