where do you keep...
ox Posted Dec 22, 2000
Hello, everyone. I'm late to the thread as well, but I read it all. Seems I have an inborn instinct to not care about "time" and I screwed up my schooling and most of my valuable young adult life doing so. I really had to retrain myself. Now I'm the one people expect to always remember everything, be on time (therefore trusted with keys), make the deadline, etc. The funny thing is that if I let myself (and that is what weekends and holidays are for) I immediately return to 'no-time', but I always remember (or leave notes for myself) to return to time-routine.
All I'm saying is yes, you can retrain yourself if you want, it can have a positive impact on your life, you can unwind the clock when you need to. Ooops...you have to really do something other than drinking or drugs if a power move in your life is important.

This is an interesting point, Ox. I've often heard it said that lazy people tend to be more driven and focussed than others, simply because they have to push themselves harder in order to get anything done at all. That would seem to tally with your observations (not that I'm implying you're lazy, by the way - just reading between the lines). I can't say that it's ever worked that way for me, though, unfortunately.
Still waiting for that 'power move' (wha?),

Hee, hee! Lear, lazy is the definition! I always found time for hanging out and partying. Self humiliation is a driving force...I realized one day that going nowhere had become my path in life. Nothing to be proud of, but at least I'll honestly say that a lazy sot can reverse their life and fortune.

That's something I can draw a lot of comfort from...

Wow, Solnushka, you are very clear about time. I am glad the question made sense to someone. I admit to being curious about where you are on the road/s in relation to the right angle bends, at age 30, 40 and in 2020?

I'm still lost in this space/time connection. So perhaps I'm not cut out for it. The road, if ever there was one, has stopped, as far as I am concerned. And I'm just bumbling around till I fall off the edge.
So in the meantime can I have some practical help with how to harness any vices or negative characteristics (like preferring to concentrate on something until I have finished it, instead of stopping because the clock says five to twelve or ten to five) to make me fit in with other peoples' lives better?

Know thyself, TC! If stuff is likely to happen, allow for it, and don't make a date for an impossible time! There are Cafes and coffee bars especially made for whiling away time, far better than being late, surely.

Well, keeping my watch 5 minutes fast works well for me.
And absolutely never - no not ever - "just doing" something when I know I should be going.
And advice from Tom Hopkins, American sales and business guru: ask yourself "is this the most productive thing I could be doing at this moment"? But never forget that posting on H2G2 frequently IS the most productive thing you can be doing - we would miss you lots if you posted less.

Well, now I am torn between talking about it and doing something about it!!!
When I was a girl, I always had trouble with the Guide Law "A Guide makes good use of her time".

Maybe you are too concerned about it, TC. You seem to be quite aware of what you need to be doing and I'm sure you keep your household happy and running well. Having children changes the picture completely. I have no children so I can be quite selfish and idealistic. You may well have mastered the fine art of doing many things at the same time. Some things seem to never get done. Some appointments aren't worth making. Prioritize. Enjoy your life...we enjoy your postings!

Thank you.
Ah yes - doing things at the same time. I think I'll start a thread on that one......................
