My knowledge of Leonard Cohen is limited to 'Hallelujah' and the album 'Leonard Cohen Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970', which I've not got, but is on my list of albums recorded on the Isle of Wight that I'll probably get around to buying one day.

In the UK Alexander Burke's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' was 2008's biggest seller of the year, a million seller and was 2008's Christmas no 1, with Jeff Buckley's cover version of the same song the Christmas number 2 with Cohen's original number 36.

My brother once described his style as "the world is a shit place, and that's alright".
Perhaps it's not the most beautiful description, but somehow there is a comfort in accepting the sorrow, not being scared of it.

I have a "best of" record somewhere, and although the sadness in his music is overwhelming, I do find peace in it too.

I'm glad we had him among us for so long.

My favorite "Hallelujah" version is the one sung by Rufus Wainwright

He sang it in the tribute film "I'm your man"

The second music concert I attended was Leonard Cohen at the Albert Hall in 1970, when I was in my late teens. We had seats up at the top, where it was hard to hear. Leonard invited those up there to come down to the arena - we made a mad dash down the stairs outside & back in to the ground floor. We then spent the rest of the concert sitting on the floor in the aisles.

You'd never get to do that now!
