I wonder...
Was baldness more prevalent in the days when men always wore hats?

How would they know if they never removed their hats? I can see them now moving from one trilby to another like a fiddler crab.

Indeed! They couldn't even bear to tip their hats in greeting to others. They had to invent this to do it for them...
