Has Brian May sold out?
shrinkwrapped Started conversation Jul 9, 2000
For the uninformed, uber-guitarist Brian May (formerly of Queen) has teamed up with the talentless no-names Five to produce a cover version of "We Will Rock You" - a truely incredible rock anthem.
I just saw it performed "live" on Channel 4's "Pary In The Park" a pop festival for groups to promote themselves to their adoring fans.
Sickening.

Don't you remember BAD NEWS? The guy has a sense of humour & a love of playing live. It's a lot less sleep-inducing than the new stuff by Clapton and other guys who had lost it.

I once saw Brian May in a sushi bar just before he performed in our town.
I was obviously going to the concert, and I just happened to spot him in the window of the restaraunt.
Now, I know people climb over each other just to meet this guy, but I saw he was eating and I thought rather than bolt into the place like a screaming madman, I'd just wave.
So I did.
Now, you'd think that after 11 Queen albums, a membership to the Fan Club, and owning both of his solo efforts, I'd be at least entitled to a wave back.
Wrong.
He was like a deer in headlights, ignoring me completely.
Disappointed, I walked (at this point a little half-heartedly) to the venue he was palying at, ticket in my pocket.
But by god I made sure I told every single passer-by where Mr May was (about to not be) enjoying his meal.
Heh.
Even a nod, and I would've been on my way......

a friend of mine went to somekind of show business party in London, and decided it would be a fine prank to swap the signs on the ladies & gents toilets.
you can guess who was first to visit the newly rearranged toilets.
much amusement all round as Mr May emerged rather quickly!

Given that I have not heard of him producing anything nor appearing in the charts since the end of Queen, surely the question should be *puts on northen accent* "Has Brian May sold owt?"

Isn't he behind this five version of we will rock you.

Yes, he is (which is why I started this topic).
Has he sold owt? (Good pun!). Well, while Queen may have been long-disbanded, they've sold loads of albums (such as the new collections) since, and will continue to do so.
I'm sure May can make money just by 'being' Brian May and shouting "I was in Queen you know! No, not Mercury, I was the guy with the big hair!" like that.

You wanna hear other new Brian May stuff? Try the MI2 soundtrack in which he does a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Have A Cigar' with the Foo Fighters.

I am going to be controversial and say that I quite like Five - they write or at least record decent pop songs and take the piss out of themselves.
Take J who said "all our songs contain either 'Get on up' or 'Get on down' - it's hardly rocket science". It was at that moment that I warmed to them completely.
But Ritchie, honey, the make up doesn't suit! It makes you look awful!

Has anyone else noticed that Queen are shrinking?
After Freddie died, you would have expected them to call it a day, but no, they went on and released a single as a trio, but still under the name "Queen", and now only Brian May and Roger Taylor appear on this Five record which claims to be "featuring Queen".
Maybe Brian and Roger should release their solo albums under the name "Queen", they might sell better...

No offence to John but he wasn't particularly proactive when it came to publicity.

She never was very tall you know, I say the TV makes her look bigger. What, sorry I thought you said The Queen was shrinking
Mr May thinks quite highly of the Foo Fighters and he's also been doing some stuff with Axl Rose which may or may not see the light of day on the next thing he does. Is the cover on the MI2 soundtrack any good.

Have A Cigar's not bad. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's perfect. There are some points in the instrumental near the end where some of Bri's twiddly bits don't mesh well. But for the most part it's more than adequate.
Also I'm not sure but I think Brian might even be singing on it. Sounds a lot like his voice, but raspier (almost like Roger Taylor's).
On the subject of Queen shrinking, just what is John Deacon up to these days? He's always been the band's quiet member. I guess as long as he gets his cut of the royalties, Brian and Roger can stick "featuring Queen" on anything they like.
