What I can't believe is that no one is challenging the assertion that Bush has a MANDATE. For crying out loud (some of which I have been doing), he may have gotten a record number of votes, but so did Kerry. Considering that more people have voted in this race than in quite a few of the previous ones, the margin between the two isn't even that statistically great.
This is a damn tragedy. Some are hoping the next four years will be so disasterous that it will break the Republicans. I fear that the reactionary, religious right will erect a new theocracy, in the manner of the Taliban and Khomeini -- and not even have the wit to realize it.

Well, he does have a mandate - the majority of the American public voted for him. If you believe what the pollsters are saying, they voted for him because they like his morals.
I think the political map of the US is fascinating - the way that the coastal regions went for Kerry and the centre went for Bush. Has the map always been this way regardless of the actual leader?

Apparently while the results were coming in, Kerry was watching a campiagn speach made by bush and said "I can't believe that I'm losing to this idiot". If he had said that during the campaign then perhaps he would have won.

Er, yes he does. More people voted for him in more states than for the other fella. That's a mandate. Just because you don't like the result, that doesn't invalidate the vote.

Well if this election has thought us anything, then it has thought us this: only people with an IQ over 100 should be allowed to vote.

So many simple things don't make sense to you Della. Let me try to explain this in words even you can understand.
Kerry conceded when he did, because:
1. The votes ALREADY counted had been split about 53:49 in favour of Bush.
2. That gave Bush a lead of xx,000 votes.
3. At that point they knew how many uncounted votes were left. In order for the remaining, uncounted votes to give Kerry victory, the uncounted ones would have had to have been split about 80:20 in favour of Kerry. What are the odds? You might as well concede.
Another point is that those votes WILL be counted.
Kerry conceded when he did because he KNEW he'd lost, and because he recognised that to prolong the agony would have the dual effect of making him look like a sore loser and America look like a backward thirdworld dictatorship that can't be trusted to run a fair election.
He was trying to minimise the damage to the image of himself and his country by admitting he was beaten.
Understand now, dear?

NOTHING can damage the image of America more than the re-election of Bush.

This statement assumes that voting intentions are based on an intellectual assessment of the candidates and their policies. If you believe this...
ha ha ha bonk.

"NOTHING can damage the image of America more than the re-election of Bush."
Your opinion, perhaps - but consider: wouldn't it have been worse to have ended up with Bush after another month of legal wrangling and claim and counter claim? Surely the answer is yes.
What we have now is "Bush won, fair and square." You may not like it, but you can't argue with it.

And of course never underestimate the advantage in a fight of self-righteous fury, faux-feminist indignation at everything, Christian hypocrisy and a guaranteed 102% reliable blinkered pig-ignorance of the evidence of external reality.
I couldn't hope to compete. The only weapon I have is being right, and we all know how much use that is in arguments with women, Christians and idiots. When you come up against all three in one, you might just as well lie down with a sign on your head saying "kick here".
