further to the story about the pit bull killed by a nail gun, the utterly predictable claims that the dog was safe. the capacity of aggressive dog owners for self delusion is both predictable and shocking. and before anyone jumps the gun, that isn't directed at any of our esteemed fellows posting on this thread.
my feeling is that owners of dogs that are proven to have attacked other animals or people should be banned from dog ownership.

THE distraught owner of the savage pitbull that mauled two women before it was shot dead by a tradie with nail gun says she wants another one.
The 21-year-old owner, who refused to be named, said she was "devastated'' by the death of "Diesel".
She said she did not believe that Diesel had been a danger and that he was "loved by everyone''.
The Telegraph has been told otherwise, with claims the bloodthirsty canine had previously eaten a kitten.

and if i were a postie or similar profession likely to be exposed to dog bites, i would carry a water pistol filled with ammonia or something else nasty. it's illegal here to make up your own capsicum spray but i am sure there are legal alternatives one could improvise.

Jif lemon is the usual recommendation. It leaks in your pocket and is always the last thing you think about when Rover's making a meal of your leg.

why would it be the 'last thing you think of' if it concerns you so much? today's water pistols are brilliant. pumped and primed they can shoot a spray or jet 10 metres or more with considerable pressure. not like the leaky junk things we had when i was a kid. my son had an amazing one with its own holster. the pump was in the holster too. completely leak free.
are you able to say what is in lemon jif that would deter dogs...wouldn't that just be the bleach component?
and where's that ginger squirrel puzzle solving ability- surely you can think of non injurious liquids that will deter a dog....

ah but anti you are talking about downunder pistols. The uk ones haven't got beyond 8.5 meteres yet.

You're paid to deliver mail. Not walk around like Two Gun Tex.
Some of the guys swore by Jif lemons - the lemon juice stings like religion when it gets in the eyes. Funnily enough, they got bitten just as much as anyone else. Probably because they would dig the lemon out of a coat pocket only when they thought a dog looked dangerous, whereas the rest of us just wouldn't go in a garden in the first place if the dog looked dodgy. Dog attacks come when you're *not* expecting them. Reactions have to be instinctive. I lashed out with my feet & it *tended* to work.
Of course, if I'd had time to think about it, I'd have got my nailgun out.

a silicon gun and some washer tweaking and lordy knows how far you could get one of those things to shoot. a clever person could fit a small electric pump powered by walking.
get cracking ginger.

are all simple things in life this complicated for you? can't get off your belt, forget to bring jif, daydreaming when dogs are about....
i can give you solutions but you need to be awake when you are delivering the mail for them to work.

Sirmoonshine7 Im pretty sure I would be banned from here if I put what I truley think about the racing industry and what happens to these beautiful gentle dogs when they're done with.

i am pretty sure greyhound that if you couch your opinions in "civilized" language you can say what you wish about what happens to those lovely creatures

Its very difficult to be civilised about such a barbaric industry. Seeing dogs with ears ripped off, acid burns to remove tattoos, dogs starved, dumped or shot with bolt guns makes it hard to be objective. Will come back to this when I have more time tho - am supposed to be working! On a friday at that!

Just wondering, if in the same way that dogs are shot for unprovoked attacks on people, that people should be shot for unprovoked attacks on dogs
