I occasionally migrating flocks of Canada geese heading south to over-winter in Mexico, even in southern California & vice versa.

There should been a 'see' between 'occasionally' and 'migrating'.

Hatton Garden jewellers broken in to and 70 deposit boxes emptied, apparently the security alarm went off, the security guard attended and couldn't see anything wrong outside so he never went in, the robbers just carried on all weekend. The Guard said he wasn't paid enough to go in and check the property! Police reckon there might be £200 million quidsworth nicked! Do they give the guard a pay rise or sack him?

Security guards are notoriously underpaid jobs. As such, guards are typically unmotivated and unimaginative people. It's a job that defines "dull routine". Anything requiring security shouldn't be left to security guards to defend.


An employer of mine, back in my early career as a freelance photographers assistant, taught me that the best way to get access to access restricted areas is to go straight to the security guard, chat him up, act like you have clearance and hand the fellow a few polaroids, maybe take a snap or two of him grinning beside whatever it is he's supposed to keep you out of.

He used this to get access to select skyscrapers in Downtown Houston.

It also helps to have a badge... any badge... make one at home and hang it from a lanyard. Flash it confidently at check points, nod and proceed through.

Well call me cynical but my first thought was that the guard in question may have been on a bit of a bonus for not being too vigilant, without prejudice mind you, but you can't help wondering.

It depends on what you want your "security" to do.

If you want your "security" to satisfy the demands of your insurance policy and act as a vague deterrent to passing yahoos with home-printed ID cards, you pay peanuts and you hire ex-coppers or people who applied to be coppers but failed the entrance criteria. Anyone can afford them and they're ten a penny.

If you want your security to actually guarantee your security, you pay very well, and you hire ex-special forces types. Few can afford them, but few really need them, which is just as well as there are relatively few of them.

Also if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.

What a coincidence, my neighbour just found her tortoise living three doors away, mind you she only put a notice in the paper shop window and they got in touch, the neighbours, not the tortoise.

Are we sure it was the same tortoise and not some doppelganger tortoise?

Yes, it was hiding under a shed, I think it was probably a terrapin building.

I think the Guardian is wrong in the treatment of this piece of news. They are just a group of British folks teaching lazy spaniards how to spend time properly.
