There's history in the making today and it may be repeating itself. Evangelicals are winning their struggle (kampf?) to take over the US military. The US economy is tanking. They may decide to go out in a blaze of glory.smiley - sadface

Have you made your plans for Kristalnacht (US) yet?

There are more Jews in New York than there are in Israel. Just from an elective point of view, Kristalnacht would be political suicide.

(Please note I am not answering a post from the antihumanist, merely from a fellow member of the thinking human race.)

Hey, here's an idea! Let's break the windows of unthinking followers of imaginary gods! I'm all over that!

Hey, here's an even better idea!

Let's not.

Let's just call them on it when they persist in insisting that others believe in their delusions, let's object to them claiming the moral high ground against all the evidence, let's not accept that the cultists' insane fantasies are the standard and that the rest of us are are deviant and let's get really, really angry when they try to impose stupidity and bad thinking on us or our children.

Let's recommend very strongly that if they intend to continue to espouse a fantasy, they keep it to themselves and stop trying to pretend that those of us who display an inclination to the rational are somehow incapable of morality. When they behave like some (one in particular) on this thread they will encounter some deeply offended and highly moral people. In other words the kind of people they pretend to be themselves, but could never truly be.

The historical basis of Christianity...

Myself, I regard then issue of whether the Jesus of the Gospels was a real person as an open one. However, I'm prepared to entertain the possibility. Of course, it has no bearing whatsoever on claims made for his divinity.

Example: We know for sure that there was an actual, living Emperor Haile Selassie II. But as to whether he was the living embodiment of Jah and liveth I-ternally...

I'd like to think so, mind. smiley - smiley

Agreed.

You'd have to look elsewhere than historicity to find a reasonable justification for a belief in the divinity of Jesus, or anyone else. Or in the concept of divinity itself, for that matter.

If this has already been posted apologies:

Near the bottom is a list of 'Have Your Say' programmes. One has Richard Dawkins on it for 50minutes.

Some very interesting questioning from the general public. Someone from the Vatican trotting out the usual Hitler/Stalin athiest stuff and many other Christians using many of the traditional gambits in their questions.

And the presence of millions of active Christians across Germany prevented Nazism...how?

Yes...I'm aware that some German Christians were active resisters of the Nazis (eg see A12961055), as were many Atheists, but I can't resist this quote...unfortunately I forget from which comedian:

"They say [The pope]quit the German army in 1945. Hitler quit the German army in 1945 - 1945 was a bad a year to be in the German army."

Aha! Thanks, Google.

No, you don't want to be Canadian....

You have to change your name to one that starts with an "A" and then sign a conspiracy agreement to become a horrible little playground bully and seek out gawky, nerdy young women to abuse.

It's not pretty.

This might amuse some here:

http://stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_and_mumbling/2008/01/heaven-hell-and.html

"When the stakes are infinite, carrots work better than sticks. This new paper estimates that, across a number of countries, a belief in heaven is two to three times as strong in getting people into church or praying regularly as is a belief in hell. Infinite gains are better incentives than infinite losses. Pascal’s wager was incomplete.
This seems illogical. Even if people who believe in hell have enormous time discount rates, the teeny prospect of avoiding infinite torment (see after line 4569 here) has infinite present value. That should motivate people to pray just as much as the prospect of infinite bliss."
