How come, for such a pedantic language, Latin makes no distinction between the perfect and the preterite?

latin...makes no sense at all

Post 76

Yelbakk

I rather thought they did make a difference there...?

Take "esse," for example.

sum - I am - present
eram - I was - imperfect (= preterite = simple past)
fui - I have been - perfect (= present perfect)
fueram - I had been - plusquam perfect (= past perfect)
ero - I will be - future 1
fuero - I will have been - future 2

But then again, even as I am copying this down from my old Latin grammar book, I am willing to convinced that I am wrong...

I have to agree that Latin makes no sense at all, for me at any rate!
I took it for a year and still wish I'd taken tech drawing instead.
"Do languages you're good at them!" So I took French, German, English and Latin.
I have used French and German to ask for beer. I often find myself asking for beer in English.smiley - cheers
I have never found it necessary to ask for beer in Latin, wasted!
