Hot water is not heavier than cold water. If you heat water it will rise because it is lighter than the cold water around it. As water cools down it gets more dense and heavier until it reaches maximum density at about 4 degrees C. Then it starts getting lighter again as ice crystals start to form and cause the water to be spread out.

In Australia, a brand name for sellotape is 'Durex'. When Mrs RBA and I attended antenatal classes the midwife told us the story of the Australian girl who walked into W.H. Smith and asked for some 'Durex'. The rather abashed shop assistant directed her to Boots the Chemist where she asked for some Durex 6 yards long and 4 inches wide. The amazed shop assistant wanted to know her her boyfriend was!
