What is the acceptable way to quote info from a website in a reference in something like an essay produced in hardcopy? In my days as a student there weren't no such thing as the World Wide Web:
Do you start www or http?
Should you put a date to 'fix' the info?
Doy you give the 'name' of the website as well as the URL?
Much appreciative of any advice

I've always just written www, but I have never seen any official rules on this. No teacher has ever complained to me about this.

I used to quote the website title and then the URL
eg:
h2g2 - URL: http:www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2

The MLA has a standard for doing that. I should know, but don't. In this day and age, my knowledge is only accessible through a modem... But if you google for MLA and "style sheet," you will get all the info you need... and more.

I just go to the site i want to link to, go to the address bar at the top, and cut and paste the whole thing into whatever i'm writing...
Is that what you mean?

That will do nicely - thanks!

Winnoch - that's what i do if I'm say, writing a letter at work and giving someone a URL, but this is for an 'essay' type thing, and so needs an academic style reference. It's something that academic saddos get very worked up about (hence style sheets produced by unis and academic journals) I will never forget having to go through my thesis because the prof wanted p36 for a page ref when my tutor had required p. 36

try searching for information at www.infoplease.com
They show you the propper layout for quoting them(web) as a source. Just click on the quote button when you've gone to some info.

I usually include a reference to the relevant section (eg a heading or subheading) AND a date - because, unlike books, the contents of a page on the internet is liable to change
And I include the http: bit too, because there's more to the net than www
A935570 has a section on *Grammar, Punctuation, Style etc* with several useful links, including *The Mayfield Handbook of Technical and Scientific Writing* http://www.mhhe.com/mayfieldpub/tsw/toc.htm

This is true. However, leaving it out wont make a lot of difference as it is the default protocol that is used if no other is designated in conjuction with WWW.
