The radio 1 message board wouldn't let me post something containing the phrase "cock up" because it contained cock.
Auto filters are no good because people cheat and use s*1* cut through's to get seen. an optional filter can work (although I spent hours on yahoo chat telling people off for using numbers in swearwords to get through the filter instead of just changing their preferences and respecting other peoples right to choose).
I remember the old filtering on yahoo chat quite fondly
s***=>poop
s***e=>poope
d***=>richard
filth(?)and porn and the really naught words=>%&(*&^$%
I never worked out what was soo offensive about the word filth.

Seeing things in a human context isn't something that can be computed easily, so unfortunately they err on the side of annoyance.
