when I was in the Army we used telex machines with punched tape. I could read it pretty fast at one stage. Murray code. Everything was so blooming loud back then!
before that, when I did my computer studies O-level we had to write programs in Basic, and put them onto punched cards. A fellow on a scooter used to collect them from the school on Friday morning, and deliver the previous weeks programs. that way it took two weeks to get a program back. Which was really depressing if you'd forgotten to put the * at the top of the program, because all you got back was a blank sheet.
Oh the good ol' days!
