The Mercury Music Prize nominees are about to be anounced, but I've been struggling to think what should be nominated as the best album of last 12 months ... any ideas?

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Jul 30, 2002
I think 14 hours of no replies to that question says something...

Alright, I'll give it a go!
My favourite album of the last 12 months is "Rockin' The Suburbs" by Ben Folds... but he's American and therefore ineligible for the Mercury Prize. Er. My favourite album by a British artist of the last 12 months is....
Errrr.......
"We Love Life" by Pulp. Unfortunately no-one else likes them now that their songs don't sound like "Common People" anymore.

Albums of the past year that earn respect?
Aphex Twin-Drucqs
Lo-Fidelity Allstars-Don't Be Afraid Of Love
DJ Shadow-The Private Press (even though he's a yank)
...and for the record, I think The Streets should walk away with the prize.

i'd really like the doves to win but it'll be close between them and the streets.
must admit, its been a disappointing year for british music.

...as long as it isn't Bowie.
Nothing against him but he's had his day and I suspect that they only shortlisted him because, like yourself, they found themselves scratching their heads to come up with candidates.

So Ms Dynamite is English? My roommates and I were discussing wether she was Dutch or American. But we cannot mention Americans then? Else I'd go for Californication(I admittedly haven't heard that one but the singles were amazing) or Vanessa Carltons debut album.

aonemantidalwave Posted Jul 31, 2002
Californication came out in 1999!
Not really a contender for album of the year...good singles though!

Xanatic Posted Jul 31, 2002
Really? I did think it might have been more than 12 months but didn't realize it was that long.

Yeah...the new album is quite good though, not quite a contender for album of the year, but quite sweet.
