I adapted his name to become my nickname. He's a comedian. His name is also used in slang to mean something that is really rather good. Why? Where from?

I thought the original Bobby Dazzler was Bobby Mitchell, the Newcastle United and Scotland winger of the 1940s and 1950s.

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

No, it's older than that.
I've found claims for it being of Yorkshire OR Australian origin, but no explanation of the wheres and whyfores...

I've heard Australian claims too, but I'm almost certain it's of British origin originally. I think Bobby George the darts player was also 'The Dazzler'.

For some reason I read this as Bobby Chariot, Alexei Sayle's v. funny crap comedian.

Great Western Lettuce (no.51) Just cut down the fags instead

Alright. How ya Diddlin?

Well bloody sod ya then.

I've been called Bobby Dazzler by my bro' for years now, as my real name is Robert and used to hate being called Bobby. He somehow adapted it and I grew to love it. No idea where it came from, but if anyone finds out I'd love to know.

After much Googling, nothing more to report on the origins, although it's also an Ale from a brewery in Ossett and an old Aussie TV show.

I'm not going down that road, Lettuce...

Glad someone else is an Alexei fan - the man was a genius. In fact, probably still is, but I haven't seen him around for ages.

I take it this thread is nothing to do with Bobby Davro. Let's keep it that way.

He did some 'How to do the... (insert dance. ie tango, salsa etc)' not so long ago. They were 5 minute(ish) programmes on BBC2 I think. But that's bye the bye - where does "Bobby Dazzler" come from?

Jack-oh, back on dry land for three whole weeks...

Methinks it harks back to the nursery, and the old rhyme Bobby Shaftoe... who went to sea, silver backles etc...

a bit of a ladies man by all accounts...

Bob-by Shaftoe gone to sea,
Silver buckles at his knee.
He'll come back and mar-ry me,
Bon-ny Bob-by Shaftoe!

Bob-by Shaftoe's bright and fair,
Combing down his yel-low hair.
He's my love for-ever more,
Bon-ny Bob-by Shaftoe!

Bob-by Shaftoe's looking out,
All his ribbons flew about,
All the ladies gave a shout,
Hey, for Bob-by Shaftoe!

I hasten to add that exact words vary from source to source; elsewhere our Bobby's described as "fat and fair" and "tall and fair".

Any advance?
