Which films should NEVER be remade?

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

There are many worse actors than Doug McLure in the world who have become box office stars, you know. Arnie, Sly, Kevin Kline, are just three I can think of. I could go on, but most of todays 'stars' are so instantly forgettable that I can't remember who they are.

I think it says a lot for McLure that people still remember him, if mostly with a wry grin.

I'm probably wrong, but was DM ever in a version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea?

He was. Disney's 1958 <?> version with James Mason as Nemo. and Kirk Douglas as well, if I remember correctly. It's a fun little piece, and still boasts the classic Nautilaus design, though I preferred Michael Caine as Nemo in the made for tv version a couple of years ago.

DM also appeared in a number of quite ridiculous, but none the less endearing Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptations with Peter Cushing and other stalwart British actors such as Anton Diffring. And he remains the one member of the cast I can name from the Virginian, and he was second lead in that! smiley - laugh

And it seems we are both wrong-he was never in 20, 000 Leagues under the Sea at all. smiley - blush

Though he was in Warlords of Atlantis, which may, or may not, be the next best thing...smiley - laugh

Wasn't Peter Gilmore in that? Surely a man who could stand to the title of 'The British Doug McClure'. I think The Simpsons character was a hybrid of DM and Troy Donohue who was another journeyman actor.

Sorry for butting in ... the blurb for Kelly Heroes says that Clint Eastwood was the no. 2 hollywood box office star at the time they made the film. Who was no. 1?

In you own time. Thanks.

Sorry - now you can resume your conversation.

I'm not certain, but was it Burt Reynolds?

Barbarella and all the campy sixties films like What's New Pussycat? should stand alone.

I don't know. Sorry if it sounded like a quiz question. I was thinking maybe Steve McQueen, or Robert Redford, but he seems a bit later.

And a quick look back doesn't show the third man voting for The Third Man<?>

The problem with the remakers is that they don't seem to try hard enough. It's just a quick way to earn some dollars. The advertising is already done.

I'm sure the upcoming remake of The Italian Job will be tosh. That's just a gut feeling. But say Guy Ritchie was driving it, it could have been good. A tribute to the original almost. Maybe.

After doing my apprenticeship with such demanding roles as Doug McClure's horse-holder I await my call to centre stage in the remake.
