So it was all part of the discussion! I was talking to one of our "senior citizen students" yesterday and he was totally against shops opening Sundays, he said it would put too much pressure on small shop owners who couldn't afford it, and encourage people to spend money they couldn't spare...

Here too, especially in smaller towns. And the library is closed Wednesday and Sunday, even though Wupp is big

I'll try to research that, could be interesting, as Wednesday afternoon is also traditionally off here!

Could be. But why Wednesday? Maybe because it's halfway to Sunday, and that gives you two opportunities for funerals per week, which is more hygenic... Bit of a depressing subject, really.

At least I found one shop that's open til 20:00 Saturdays, so I did manage to go shopping... There's a small supermarket in the main train station that's open every day, but the prices are horridly overinflated!
