Ah, I thought it might be a hemisphere thing. Like thongs in Oz are rubber things on feet, sandals or whatever, and the underwear type of thong is called a G-String

Yes it gets a bit confusing different name for different things.
UK Trousers, slacks, knickerbockers, bamuda shorts, shorts, hipsters, bell bottoms, jeans, joggers, track suit bottoms or trackies.
USA Pants for all the above.
UK names for underwear, pants, boxers, undies, breeks, grundies, grunts, thongs, slips, breifs, knickers, Y fronts, g strings, etc....

Yep. Although in the Middle ages it was exactly other way round, women weren't allowed underwear! A bishop was even excommunicated for allowing women to wear rabbit-fur underpants while travelling in winter...
