I couldn't choose a favourite ever book, but I can give you my top four:
"My Secret History" by Paul Theroux
"Falling" by Elizabeth Jane Howard
"The Picture of Dorian Grey" by Oscar Wilde
"The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax (which is an autobiography, not a novel)
I never watch films of books I have enjoyed because they never live up to the book.

There are some good films of books...ok only three spring to mind and that was a trillogy, something about a ring, a dark lord and so on... oh yeah lord of the rings parts 1 to 3...
at this moment I would say my best book is
The Crow Road by Iain Banks, though I may well change my mind in a few moments, but it is a good book...

On the subject of Iain Banks
Whit was his best book I think, although a book has yet to grab my attention like the Crow Roads first sentence.
Have you read his sci-fi stuff as well. That is really good, especially Excession
His new book Dead Air was getting back towards what he is good at after Song of Stone and The Business (his weakest work IMHO)

my most favourite book, that i read and read over again has to be:
Spiderworld: The Tower
by Colin Wilson
absolutely awe inspiring and a great insight into the human mind and it's evolution.

I have to say having revised my top I would say that Dune by Frank Herbert is my all time favorite. So much so I even wrote an article on it
