Currently I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov by (I guarantee I'm going to spell this wrong) Fyodor Dostoevsky. You can believe that or not, I don't care, except that it's true.
I think anyone that likes to read should read Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins.
Essentially a story of two immortals that are so in love but so bored with their endless existence that they decide to 'pass through the halls of death' and be reborn. Not wanting to be apart though, they invent a unique perfume and put it on each other so that whatever form they may take in their next life they will be able to recognise each other by the scent. The woman passes through the hall, the man gates scared and isnt brave enough to die. He then embarks upon a quest to find his reborn love.
er I think. It's been a long time since I read this, but I remember being struck at how cool this story was. Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas by the same author is also a worthy read.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett ad Neil Gaiman. Love it! Intelligent, thought provoking treatise on the subject of religion and Armageddon, but guarranteed to have you in stitches.
Failing that, anything by Terry Pratchett or Piers Anthony

Good Omens
"the kids on bikes who just went past. Did one of them have something siiting in the front basket with a face like a friendly t*rd?"
or something. One of the few books to make me laugh out loud.

Mervin Peake, Titus Groan and Gormenghast, specifically. (and no, I don't actually think the BBC did a bad job a few years ago - although Jonathon Rhys Meyers was bit too cute)
