The rape of Scooby Doo
Mick, Lancashire, UK Posted Apr 1, 2001
For all of us who grew up watching Scooby Doo, Penelope Pitstop et al, it is always problematic to see a 'live' movie version., Yes The Flintstones was abysmal, as was the He-Man movie.
However, a couple of weeks ago I was forced (by a 4 year old nephew) to watch a Scooby Doo video. Reality Check Alert! Scooby Doo was cack! Most of the stuff we watched as kids was. Try watching The A-Team, Starsky and Hutch or Airwolf again and you'll see what I mean. Hollywood churns out this bilge because they know what sells. Until the target audience (i.e. middle American conservatives, essentially) decide they want quality stories rather than bigger special effects then the rest of the world will continue to suffer mediocrity. The world will never be a fair place until Steven Seagal movies take less money than Terry Gilliam movies.

Never mind the live-action version, with or without SMG, surely the show took a nosedive when that irritating little oik scrappy-doo was introduced? Scrappy should be put down, and the less humanely the better! In fact that may be the only saving grace of the movie, if Scrappy isn't in it!

Don't know about the film, my gut reaction is Nooooo! But I agree that the programmes you watch as kids don't always bear scrutiny when you've grown up a bit!
Incidentally, has anyone seen the episode of Johnny Bravo featuring Scooby and the gang? Talk about tongue in cheek! Haven't laughed so much in ages... Check it out!

Hey, anybody who thinks Scrappy-Doo was the low point of Scoobyism seems to have forgotten their hillbilly cousin Yabba-Doo... (groan - I wish I was making that up, I really do)
As to the film version, a guy named Matt Lillard's got the Shaggy gig. If I was pressed, I could name a few things he appeared in, but it's late when I'm writing this!
I've seen a pic of the main cast (bar Scooby who hasn't been CGI'ed yet, I'm assuming), and all's I can say is, I'm never going to be able to watch Buffy in the same light again. Not after I've seen her in those purple tights...!
