A Conversation for La Marseillaise - France's National Anthem

Great entry... but I am going to be picky. I watched Casablanca a couple of weeks ago, and Lazlo is a member of the resistance but he is a Hungarian. The best moment for me in the movie is when the french collaborateurse, whose name I think is Yvonne, stands up and sings the Marseillaise with tears running down her cheeks.

A great entry, Spiff. Well done.

Hi Ben, thanks for those few kind words, and for the correction. smiley - biggrin

I haven't looked at the update, but i did see this earlier, and i considered arguing (tongue firmly in cheek) that I had known that all along, and that he may have been Hungarian, but he was still a French resistance hero... Suffice to say i thought better of it. smiley - smiley

hi Ash, ta muchly. Could you do something about the odd formatting of the 6th verse, by any chance? The rest are English left/French right (er, no, the other way round!) whereas for some reason the 6th verse has the English text below the French.

I realise this is all to-ing and fro-ing, but it would look nicer all the same, i think. smiley - smiley

No hurry, of course, and if you don't get time, no probs. smiley - smiley

Actually it now reads a little oddly:

When a group of German officers begin singing a patriotic song a French Resistance hero (who is actually Hungarian) leads his countrymen in a stirring rendition of their national anthem symbolically drowning out the Aryan strains.

How about "a Resistance hero (who is actually Hungarian) leads the French in a stirring..."

Is it not a question of getting the hyphen in the right place?

Either he is a French-Resistance Hero, i.e., a Hero of the French Resistance, and his nationality is irrelevant.

Or perhaps he is a Hungarian French-Resistance Hero or a French-Resistance Hero from Hungary?

And so on.

I saw the movie recently, it makes great play of it being an international resistance.
