... who thinks 'fatherland' is an odd translation of 'La Patrie'? I've always thought 'motherland' is a better option.

No. I too have mused over this question of gender translation = and not only with regard to La Patrie (although I quite recognise the logic of translating it 'Motherland').
I think that in English culture we tend to talk more easily of 'the Mother Country' - rather than either 'Motherland' or 'Fatherland'.
To be honest, I can't remember what my thinking was at the time I wrote this. It seems like half a lifetime ago!
