I have heard that term all my life and wondered who or what they are. Thanks for writing this - a while ago.
Do you happen to know any names of some womens branches who are similar or connected?

The thing you are looking for might be "le droit humain", which is mixed freemasonry. It exists in 71 countries, including Britain. I've never been to a British Lodge, but if they're anything like the continental ones, they offer something unique. Some people prefer this type of masonry to "United Grand Lodge of England" Freemasonry. Unlike UGLE masonry which seems to be in a bit of a decline, it's growing in numbers and accepts people of either (any?) sex. There are women only lodges too, but they're usually for wives/daughters of male masons.

Abbi, you're in the US right? (according to your profile, anyway!). If that's the case, then the organisation you want is called Co-Masonry -- a splinter off traditional masonry whose only difference to traditional masonry is that lodges are fine mixed-sex. (Co-Masonry is international so you're still fine if you're not in the US, it's just that the link below is for the American branch!)

There's even an application page on the site (under 'join').
Good luck!
