I have just read your very interesting article on Freemasons. I am trying to complete the biography of a Methodist missionary called Barnabas Shaw who went to South Africa in 1816. I found, carved on a rock in little Namaqualand his name, with the date 1816 and also the dividers and compass which it seems mark the fact that one is a Freemason. I wanted to find out when he had become a Freemason and who had proposed him, but was unable to have access myself to the library in London. Thanks a lot. Regards. AR1

I think Lord Irish might be the man to ask about this as he is a Freemason.
