Florida Sailor All is well with the world

Good to see this back in Peer Review.

I think most of us would enjoy the section under the first header if it read more like a family history, and less like a genealogical report, where we have to work out the dates to figure out who was who. Maybe something like;

We know several things about 'Happy Tom's' family. His great-grandfather was married in... to ...

Just a few words on each generation. You really don't have to tell us everything you don't know, if you don't tell us we won't know either. A mystery or two is fine, maybe something like 'no record had been found about...', But try to limit this to 2 or 3 important points.

I have not included your full text as I would rather read it in your own words. I think that if you make make this first part more of a story, and identify each generation in respect to 'Happy Tom', you will hook more readers to enjoy the rest of the Entry.

I would really like to see this on the Front Pagesmiley - smiley

Welcome back David.

I hope we manage to get this Entry finished and ready for the Front Page. It's a worthy story of a family's history smiley - ok

Are there any more comments, and any response to the points that Florida Sailor has raised?

Florida Sailor All is well with the world

I have read through this several times since my original comments, for some reason it seems to flow better than my first reading. I thought it had been revised, but it may be that I had been reading too many dry genealogies at the time and was just a bit jaded by the format.

There is a lot of interesting details here, including the songs. I believe a few tweaks from a sub-editor will quickly bring this up to guide standards.

I agree – this is a very promising article which I believe would already be in the Edited Guide if the author of which didn't keep disappearing shortly after putting the entry in Peer Review. This has led to the situation where the article has been in Peer Review on 3 previous occasions, as well as the Edited Guide Writing Workshop twice and Flea Market once. I think the last thing that anyone would want is for this cycle to continue – where:

1.) the article is placed in Peer Review
2.) the author leaves h2g2 for a bit
3.) the article is removed from Peer Review
4.) the author returns, and places the article back in Peer Review, and the cycle starts again.

Time to break the cycle, I think. The author has been given a chance to address the few minor points raised, but I cannot see that David Parker's absence would prevent this from reaching the front page, and I hope he gets to see this as an Edited article next time he returns to h2g2.

It's an in depth family history. I don't see anything barring it from the Edited Guide in its present form.

There can't be much more history left for the author to find in the family archives, which could be added at a later date smiley - ok

h2g2 auto-messages

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
