Why is it always everyone else copying the americans? Surely its the other way around? Americans seem to need their own version of everything. The english say those words such as trousers because they are the real words! Not because they are substituted.

Actually, pants is the 'real' word. The British changed it in the 1800's.

Actually, the original English word is 'hose'. However, that isn't used any more. However, the word 'trousers' has been in the English vocablulary longer than 'pants', as 'pants' only really caught on in the 19th century, whereas 'trousers' is 16th century. 'Pantaloons' and 'trousers' are about the same age depth.
