Welcome on board, Puffypants!
So what brought you here? Did you run out of , or have you found that you're gaining weight and getting spotty for some mysterious reason?

Thanks! I'm happy to be here. Or something like that... I don't know if it would be happy...
No, I was just looking at someone's personal space and saw a link to the what do you call it - the club for happy people. I can't remember what it's called. - I clicked on it to see what all this nonsense was about smiling a lot. There I saw a conversation about P.U.D.D.I.N.G. and thought, "This is more like it!". That's all. I hope that answers your question.
Are we allowed to smile if we are actually happy?
(I'm having trouble deciding what smileys(smileys - that doesn't even work here) to use here. )

We've tended to use and the most, but is certainly very fine too. And of course you can when you actually feel like it. It's just being coerced into pretending to be happy that makes us go all .

Puffy, I agree that 'smileys' isn't an appropriate term, especially as it doesn't cover the range of things that H2G2 has provided. In other places I've seen people refer to such things as 'emoticons' or 'emoties', which is a better description but doesn't cover things like snowballs, towels, etc.

Hi Chupito
If you read post 488 (on the last page) Ormondroyd explained to me how to get the badge on my PS .... I'm a total drongo when it comes to anything like that so if I can do it anyone can - best of luck

That's what I thought. I've never liked it when these ultra-happy people try to make me . Only makes me angrier.
I don't know what we're supposed to call these "smileys".
"Little picture-things-that-you-put-with-your-postings"? SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF ANOTHER NAME!!!

Regarding what to call them, if you'd all care to read my last post (509, I think), you'd see that another name for these things is 'emoticons' (short for emotion icons) or 'emoties'. You can call the unhappy/cross ones 'Grumpies' if you like. I'll just go off in a huff and sulk 'cos you've ignored me.

I didn't mean to ignore you Cheerful Dragon (d'you think you oughta change that name btw) .... you're right, they are known as emoticons elsewhere but I think this still has a bit of an optimistically cheery ring about it .... we don't want to go giving anyone the wrong impression now do we ...?

According to the OED, 'emotion' can mean 'disturbance of mind' - something I would have thought was definitely suitable for us P.U.D.D.I.N.G.s
As for changing my name, I've been a portion of P.U.D.D.I.N.G. since January 2004. (See post 159 for my request to be signed up.) Ormondroyd queried the use of 'the C-word', as he called it, in post 161. My response is in post 165, and my acceptance into the group is in post 166. In the days before the menu to 'select a curmudgeon' there was a footnote saying I'm not relentlessly cheerful. So if my name is acceptable to Ormondroyd, you can darned well lump it! So there!
Oh, and I'm the person who nominated Mary Poppins as an enemy of P.U.D.D.I.N.G, and the Grumpy Old Men and Women as heroes. So if that doesn't make me pro-grumpy, I don't know what does.
And I'm going to get really grumpy now. I've had to add/amend this posting twice. The first time I thought of something else to say. The second time I noticed a typo, which is not a problem in itself, but I also noticed I'd typed "would OF" instead of "would HAVE"! This is just not something I do! Hubby reassures me that my MS - it can cause depression, by the way - is not causing me cognitive problems. I'm not so sure.

my my, well that certainly put me in my place ..... I still think emoticons sounds too up-beat for me (me, that is, not necessarily the rest of the world ...) so hereinafter I shall call them Grumpies, as I believe is my right. If you've got a problem with that Cheerful Dragon, then feel free to keep it to yourself

Just as a 'by the way' - sometimes when I do postings on other sites, I sign as C-D. I do this because I can't be bothered to type my name in full, but I reckon it's a perfectly acceptable alternative if you don't like 'the C-word'. So feel free to call me C-D.
