Well it's a first! I've upset the moderators!!!
I had my nickname as the German for 'Saturday Night is Oktoberfest Night', which apparently is unacceptable, so they reset it. OK, so there's a rule about not having foreign posts, but I think that's taking things a little far. Especially when it wouldn't even need an O grade in German to work out what it meant. I'd reproduce it here to illustrate the point, but I'd better not - stick it through babelfish (ironically, a DNA inspired translation tool) if you want to see what I mean.
What if my actual name was foreign? Would that be banned?
Ach well. (oops, used some Scots there....)

HI YA BIG BIRD yours truly Oetzi
Thanks for the advice on the click bar humdinger but to be honest I've given up on this cloak and dagger stuff with passwords. Seriously I suffer from a mental health problem. In everyday terms this means that my short??long term memory is scrambled. The only way to free it up is with the old ALKL and thats out.
As far as moderation with foreign words is concerned, well, this corporation has done away with gender signs on toilets so that gives
some idea of the climate. No template no fly big bird.
Regards Oetz

Maybe it was just until they can get someone to translate it for them? I think I read that on another thread -- that they take foreign language down until they can be sure what it means, then put it up. Intern probably would know.

Nope. It was "it's foreign, and therefore it's banned". Simple as that. I translated it for them, and they still said no.
So much for the 'world wide' web.

Big Red Posted Sep 22, 2003
That's just silly. I've seen *a lot* of French on various threads.

Hey, I'm not trying to build some big consipracy theory here. This ain't a free-for-all internet chat room - it's a BBC run site, and Auntie Beeb as we like to know her is a government funded organisation to provide the people with information and entertainment. As such, she has rules, and when you sign up for a h2g2 account you sign up to those rules. You can go on about the pre-BBC days when life was skittles and beer, but the fact is that without the BBC there would no longer be a bar to play and drink in.
I felt that the application of the rules in this case was a case of, as I said in a mail to the moderators, applying the letter of the law over the spirit - I was not trying to cover what I was saying by doing so in a foreign language. In fact, it probably wasn't even correct German - it was whatever the German equivilent of 'franglais' is (Engeusch?) probably.
So, I had to change my tagline. Big wow. Not the end of the world. I've done it three times this week already. If the moderator is someone being forced to just follow the rules without question then well, they can't do much about it. They have my sympathy and understanding. If it's someone who gets their jollies from censoring people, then I hope they enjoyed it - it makes me happy to know I've made their day. Whatever, it's not a big deal.
I just wanted a moan - and that, my friends, is something they'll never censor on this site. For if they did, they would have no site at all
- hoping at least some of that was coherent

That's nothing to do with this.
That was a) a whole thread, and b) French (ish), which they do claim to try and translate. Mine was a) one easy to understand phrase in my tagline, especially if they'd read my journal or homepage, and b) in German (ish).

HI YA FOLKS
Now looky here chickie/wickie I pay E200 a year for this service.
Further, a male member of my family has fought in every, yes everyone of the wars in the last century. Just for the record tweety pie I posted a sharp crit to Bush House in support of your predicament.
The fact is that nobody the desk could give a definite safe interpretation and, to failsafe, is preferable to allowing non kosher activities.
Big Bird they need you in the UN man, just thing of the big toyota cruiser the endless days in far off places healing the sores of the world. Letting those good looking journalists court your next move.
The T shirt sales alone will keep you in smalls.
Regards Oetzi cool on the mac

Why do people think the fact that their families fought in the war is in someway an argument for anything? Members of my family fought and died in various wars too, including against the Germans. I'm immensely grateful and respectful of them, but I don't really believe that entitles me to anything.
Somehow I think the UN have enough problems without me.

how many would say "members of my family"fought and died in various wars too. I'm immensely grateful and respectful of them, but I don't really believe that entitles me to anything."

are we to assume if you make war on the "germans" it does not count as a war
