Our poor old microwave has been acting really squirrely lately.
I guess it has every right to, seeing as how it's over 20 years old.
It would just randomly stop in the middle of cooking something. If we unplugged it for a few seconds and plugged it in again, it would start working again, but it was starting to do this somewhat regularly. It became increasingly difficult to figure out just how long something had already cooked before it suddenly stopped.
So it was decided that we should get a new microwave because it would be terrible if it was in the middle of cooking something and suddenly stopped working and we couldn't get it to start again. Besides, it seemed like it wasn't even giving us full power a lot of times, since foods that were supposed to be done in 5 minutes were still frozen in the middle after that time...
Anyhow, Shorty (my chauffeur in training ) took me to Sears ("Where America Shops") to get some vacuum cleaner bags and I remembered that I was supposed to be looking for a new microwave... They had two that were on sale that I was interested in, one with 1200 watts that it turned out they were out of, and one with 1000 watts that they had plenty of in stock. So that's what we got.
Now, what do I do with a slightly squirrely but still kinda working microwave?

That's an excellent idea, except that it will do the same thing to whoever you give it to, and when your life has already been turned upside down - do you really need a "squirrely" microwave to deal with? Besides that - it might be shutting itself down because it overheats or has a short in it. Which means a fire or blow-out waiting to happen. As cheap as microwaves can be now-a-days, I'd just get rid of it if I were you Lady Scott. However, don't be surprised if the new one doesn't last more than a couple of years. They don't make them like the one you just replaced anymore. Electronics are made to be disposable now - keeps us consumers buy-buy-buying! I had an Amana Radar-range that I loved! Cooked much better then current microwaves, more evenly (and it didn't even have a turntable!), but I had to put it to sleep when it was around 20 years old also

Coun't yourself lucky. Our microwave is only 800watts and is rather underpowered. And it leaks microwaves. At least its not as bad as the one in halls. That one could even burn you if you put you hand in the wrong place neer it while it was on

I guess the best thing to do with our old one is to just toss it then...
AO - That microwave that seems to be leaking sounds downright dangerous!

I remember an episode of Barney Miller
that had a deranged citzen who thought
microwaves from the radio transmitters
were frying his brain.
Well, *something* was frying his brain, but
I don't know if it was that.

Ohh, you never got seriously burnt, but it did warm you hand up rather alarmingly if you put it neer the bottom of the door whilst it was on. It never had any noticable effect on our brains.

Perhaps not. I think our wearing of saucepans and aluminum foil on our heads to stop the CIA seeing our thoughts from outer space may have stopped a large quotent of the radiation

Believe me, if there were anything to worry about, reproductive-wise, about sitting at a computer all day at w*rk, I'd be worried. Though maybe you're not aware of my being a worrywart, Anvil... But ask anyone in this thread
