The Return of the Stripey Beast!

Ah yes! Cous-Cous Rock...patent that notion...or did Damon Albarn already do that? See the thread in 'It's Just a Cycle', classical music, african or western, will be the next victims of the conglomerates(sic)and the next to fall prey to the almighty 'quick buck'.
But I think that, when all is said and done, if you like it, you'll listen to it, if you don't, you'll laugh and berate it in a forum like this and get involved in a discussion about the relative merits of which ever form of music most turns you on!
Personally, I think it's time for a Gracie Fields revival, remixed by Fatboy Slim, with Vanessa Mae guesting and Kiri Te Kanawa rapping a Dido lyric over the top and a recording of a Martin Luther King speech being played as fade out...Religio-Retro-Rap 'n' Roll.

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

Actually, on reflection, I'd rather have it known as Cous-Cous Dance, as most of the acts, be Cheb Khaled, Digital Bled or MC Sultan have a pretty strong dance ethic.

Albarn's playing a melodica with some Malian musicians is just about typical of the white man in black Africa thing really. Mali doesn't count as North Africa, and as it already has it's fair share of international superstars I think it's safe to say that I wouldn't class it as an untapped musical resource.

Western musics relationship with Africa has always been problematical, going back to Gabriel's early experiments with sounds from all over the continent, and Paul Simon's Gracelands (which of course led to the farcical sight of Jerry Dammers calling for a boycott of concerts featuring Hugh Masakela, South African political exile.)

Maybe there will be no next big thing. With the growth of international travel, cultural awareness, the web, P2P programmes and the like maybe it will all be next little things. A number one single these days sells way less than it did even five years ago, and that's not just due to P2P either, whatever the record companies tell us.

Btw, Claire Sweeney-failed actress? How? A pretty well regarded turn in one of Britain's more successful soaps and a successful run in the west end, both acting and singing in Chicago on the west end stage. I mean, I don't really feel a need to defend her per se, but if we are going to complain about things like this, lets at least make them accurate complaints?

Radio one! Ha! That's another joke in itself smiley - winkeye

If I have to be put thruogh hearing my sister automatically change her skin colour when she hears Tim westwood (who is also white but wants to be black - so she says) on radio 1, I swear, I will Shoot the radio!

No offence to anyone who likes Rap or will kill me smiley - winkeye

And Linkin Park are great! They're nowhere near the next Eagles, or Queen or anything, but they are, in fact, pretty damn good - Now, I Hate, despise, even, Rap - I don't care too much for Metal either - But somehow put the two together and you have a winner for me smiley - smiley

Ah but what is "real Music"?

To a ten year old girl, the rancid and evil wailing of Atomic Kitten is as real as it gets. That music is her whole life and every waking moment is spent with that music going through her head.

Which is pretty much what I require from my music. Of course it goes without saying that I always assume MY music is real and other people just have not got the stringent standards I have set myself!! smiley - monster

True enough - I mean, I like some bands like Idlewild and Travis, who my sister despises - she's more into Gareth Gates and Will Young (I suppose I have to thank her for teaching me their full names... or not smiley - erm)

And when her "real music" comes on the TV or radio, I feel like getting the nearest hard object and hurling it at either the TV, Radio or her. smiley - laughsmiley - erm

I try to listen to Radio1 during the day because i find Mark & Lard really funny, but i'm lucky in the fact that i have a remote control for my stereo so whenever some rap, trance, Rnb comes on the stereo is switched to the cd.
Mark & Lard play resonably good music, mainly 'cos no kids listen to them. Then at 3pm when Chris Moyles comes on the music is so bad you just have to turn it off.

M&L's musical programming seems to have improved. I noticed that around the start of their show, they often play an unplaylisted track by an artist they don't like (Craig David, M.O.P.). Makes you wonder if it's part of a deal with management smiley - winkeye

A real boon for the beeb is their new 6music, the digital channel. Thankfully you can get it over the 'net though, seeing as most people don't have digital radios yet and aren't likely to for a few years.
Has anyone else noticed with radio1 that they seem to be doing more and more or the international audience? Even down to special things like their email round up and such? I get the impression that radio1 is no longer aimed at the british audience.

But I would advise people to listien to 6music as it is good. The only two downsides to listiening to it over the 'net is that it ties up the phone line, not really a problem, and that you have to use that annoying RealOne Player. I hate that programme and the way it hogs sound cards. But, a small price. The paylists on 6music are a darn sight better than any of the other bbc radio channels.

Against my usual policy I am going out of my way to recommend something here.
Anybody who is interested in thrilling music should beg steal or borrow a copy of Rachid Taha's 'Made in Medina'. Taha is an Algerian ex-pat living in Paris who records (mostly) in London. Made in Medina is a superb example of the way in which rock can be rejuvenated by outside influences as Taha and his producer Steve Hillage gleefully dismantle musical barriers with musicians from Egypt, Algeria, New Orleans and London.

A-ha! Am I maybe the only one to have specifically kept Real Networks` original 100% free "real player" before it went all free-trialley with "realOne"? smiley - biggrin

My ISP are still dishing it out with their Setup CDs smiley - biggrin The original Real Player was on there when I made the switch to broadband about a month after (or at least a month, anyway) the 100% free player was done away with smiley - erm

Anyway, off to listen to 6music now - Is it any good? I shall let you know, those poor people on webtv without the digital TV version of it - Or maybe fortunate people, you never know -
