I'm not sure, but in my opinion, the difference between music styles that i listen to and don't, is that the bands i listen to, "did it for the music", whereas the music i dislike seems to be the groups that make music "for the money"...
Does that make any sense?

Yes, that makes a lot of sense.

There is a detectable sincerity about something that is done as an end in itself, rather than to enrich the practitioner.

No doubt those more knowledgeable about the technical aspects of music than myself would be even more aware of the cynical "button pushing" elements of a lot of compositions....

Virtuosi see the advantages of using canned tracks as a background for their work, for convenience if nothing else. I cite Kitaro and the more recent Joe Satriani work as examples. There is an obvious distinction between good performances in this milieu, and repetitive mind-numbing noise. My opinion of Techno is as follows:
Computers are not composers. Period.
