Dai has to have some heart surgery soon, and one of the things he might not be able to do afterwards is go scuba diving. So he has been setting up a marine fish tank. This is a very slow and long drawn out process, making sure the water temperature, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and salinity etc are OK.
You build up the living creatures gradually, so we have a pair of clown fish (Laurel'n'Hardy) and a lovely shrimp (Sirius). We were a bit concerned about leaving them for a few days, but they seem to have survived. The salinity in the water is very high today, though, so no more additions for a while.
He was delighted though to see little creatures scurrying about in the living rock. Must be the only groom to get home and be happy to find he's got crabs.

My son once had a fish tank. It was fascinating - until it started to leak. The same happened to our downstairs neighbours recently, so you'd be well advised to place it somewhere 'safe' (not on a carpeted floor, for instance).

I'm reminded of a Pratchett line in "Only You...."
"Most of the floor was bare pine, but varnished and polished to show that they could have afforded carpets if they'd wanted them"
The floor in our lounge is French Oak....

I love these fellows: http://www.fish-journal.com/2011/10/siamese-fighting-fish.html
They are a bit hypnotic when you watch them swimming, though!

Minor panic this morning - the temperature alarm went off, and Sirius's skin was lying on the bottom. A quick google reassures us that healthy shrimps moult on a regular basis, and we are keeping an eye on the temp until it comes back under 27 degrees.
