Does safari load h2g2 pages from the cache?
kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website Started conversation Nov 30, 2006
Today I'm noticing that my PS link in my Bookmarks bar is loading older versions of the page. It's never done that before, at least not generall that I've noticed. I have to refresh each time I go to my PS.
Any ideas what that's about? Is it something to do with h2g2? Or have I changed something in Safari?

It appears to only be doing it from my Bookmarks links (both PS and More Postings). Links off h2g2 (My Space button, or Kea button) go to the latest version of the page.

Kea, what do you mean by "older versions" - is your content outdated, or is the conversation list just lagging? There's an ongoing problem on DNA sites where converstaion lists and the like sometimes stop updating for anything from five minutes to half an hour, without showing any evidence of what went wrong when they return to normality. It gets discussed on the Hub occasionally.

It just started doing that to me within the past week.

It's just the conversation lists afaik (I haven't updated my page recently so don't know if that would be affected).
Refreshing does bring it up to date, but the weird thing is I've never had to do this on Safari before (I have had to do it with Opera which is part of why I stopped using it ages ago).
And it appears only to be happening from the links I have in the bookmarks bar, not the links off the h2g2 pages (whereas Opera I seem to remember always loaded from the cache no matter which link you used).
Scandrea, is that the same with you - that the h2g2 page links work ok, but not your bookmarks?

Just recently this has started for me on My Conversations. I've been using Safari for quite a while, so I blame it on hootoo!

Travller in Time on his head
"I have only found changes to the message boards recently, the last 'real' change for HooToo (dna Cluster) was the html caching on the WEB servers (late 2005 / early 2006 ?).
There are minor changes due to changes for the boards.
Well, I can not really compare 'Safari' as both OSX 9.2 systems lack the original 'Safari'. (any known source?). Anyway I use several brands of browsers/ feeders and the only change recently (last summer) had to deal with some rendering issues.
The effect reminds me of one update I had with Internet Eplorer some time ago, suddenly the refresh behaviour changed, never to be changed back again on that system.
How about 'FireFox' ? For me it is the most compatible browser (runs on all graphical platforms). "

I've seen the same thing, just started in the last week or so. In my case, I noticed it in the conversation pop-up widget, using the link from my space (not bookmarked). What's really weird is that sometimes it opens up correctly, but then after a refresh it shows an older version of the page, then stops refreshing. For instance, It'll say I posted yesterday and there are 50 new messages, then a minute later (after I've done nothing) it'll say I posted 10 minutes ago and there are no new messages (exactly what it said the last time I exited Safari, the day before).
I did install the Mac OS X security update this week, but I think the problem started just before that. I'm not entirely sure of that, so it could be something to do with the security update.
But then again, some people over at Lil's Atelier have a similar problem with Firefox in the last week, so it could be a problem with h2g2. I'll have to switch to firefox for a few days to see if happens there too.

Well mine's stopped doing it tonight *shrug*. If it starts again I'll try Firefox too.
I haven't done that security update yet.

A-ha!
I suspect, therefore, that things are stalling, but only on one of the servers!

It's stopped for me as well. I only installed the update 2 days ago, and it was doing it before then.

It's been doing it again for me today but not continuously.

Traveller in Time drawing a little overview
"The DNA cluster is made of several machines. The dna database server is at the center and the NARTHURs are the bypasses.
The dna server has the data, the WEB servers have < <./>status</.> >. "

Oh cool, so we can use that status link to possibly identify exactly which one is serving old data? And then report the problem, of course.
The problem is back in spades right now, it's effecting my view of forums now and even a shift-reload wouldn't cause it to update properly. I had to change skins before I could see the 3 most recent postings here.
One of the NARTHURs showing me a page exactly as I last looked at it makes perfect sense, when it comes to the conversation popup widget. I'm probably the only person who looks at *my* conversations that way, so the copy on the server cache would have been the last one I saw.
