Well, I never knew that about Barnoldswick in the Guinness book of records. You'd think it would also be in the running for "most consecutive silent letters", though.

O.L.S Whale [1-8+7+(3x7x2)=42] Quite disturbing in appearance, but harmless enough, I assure you!

Aaah, so you've heard the barlick dialect then

Not really, but I knew that much (you mention it in the article and all). Mind you I've since come across another example of not pronouncing half a name: The Vancouver district of Tsawwassen seems to be said something like "Swaen" by the locals.

it's coz the local dialect (not just barlick, but much of the pendle district too) is really lazy, also speaking proper english doesn't tend to sound right in the accent. so the letter t seems to disappear from about four fifths of the english language. double 't's in the middles of words and any 't' that isn't emphasised in normal speech just isn't spoken.

Having said that, it is a really adaptable accent, it's easier for someone with a barlick type accent to impersonate other accents than it is for, say, a scouser to do the same.

I see. Mind you, dropping "t"s is hardly a unique trait.
