h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Has anyone been watching that show on the Fox network called Joe Millionaire? About twenty-five women are competing to marry a man that they think is a multimillionaire. But the truth is he is a construction worker. I think it is an awfully cruel premise for a tv show. However, I must admit that the whole thing fascinates me. If one of the women really falls in love with Joe, will she still love him when she finds out he is not wealthy? The romantic in me hopes this show has a happy ending, but the cynic in me thinks "No way!" It is rather amusing to see how greedy some of the participants in this little farce are. Some of the women will deserve a rude awakening, in my opinion. But some of the women seem genuinely sweet, and I hate the fact that they are bound to be hurt. I would be furious to be deceived like that. Joe Millionaire seems to be a nice enough guy, but he is lying to everyone. How can you found a genuine relationship on such a total lie? Is there even a chance he will find Mrs. Right? I will be watching.

Yes it is cruel, and I hope (really hope) that they don't find a way to import it over here. Does anyone else think that there is inherent sexism in this show's premise? That it somehow implies and aims to prove that all women are gold-diggers, and that diamonds are indeed a girl's best friends?

I agree it is cruel, however I suspect that if he ends up with a nasty girl they'll probable deserve each other!

Besides, what is the point of starting a relationship with somebody whose idedntity is a fraud? Would you trust them later?

yes, and if he's dappy enough to start a relationship with that kind of premise, and is willing to go out with someone who wants him for his money then he and she deserve one another...

I have dated a few rich guys, and found them to be people that are more needy than ordinary guys. It seems they have everything they could want materially, but are suspicious of everyone wanting them for their money, so can not have a truthful relationship as a result.
Intimacy can ONLY happen when there is the vulnerability of truth being told.
(Maybe that's why so many relationships break off)

A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a group of about a dozen boys, all of them between 10 and 12 years of age. The group surrounded a dog.

Concerned the boys might be hurting the dog, he went over and asked "What are you doing with that dog?"

One of the boys replied, "This dog is just an old neighborhood stray. We all want him but only one of us can take him home. So we've decided that whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog."

Of course, the reverend was taken aback. "You boys shouldn't be having a contest telling lies!" he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten minute sermon against lying, beginning, "Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie," and ending with, "Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie."

There was dead silence for about a minute.

Just as the reverend was beginning to think he'd gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, "All right, give him the dog."

I think the whole premise of the show is false. And I also happen to think that relationships cannot engineered on-camera. Especially relationships based on a deception...

I'm afraid I can't have too much sympathy for these people. If they're willing to appear on a tv show then they probably deserve the dissappointment. Especially now that 'reality' tv is so prevelant. It's not as if they haven't had warning from every other similar show that these shows are designed to make fools of the 'ordinary' people watching them.

It's funny how these show's present themselves with a psuedo-psycological research angle. Big Brother did this. Currently in the UK we have Wife Swap running - what happens if you send the wives from two different families to live with the other for a week. Joe Millionaire seems to be trying the same.

Tonights episode had the poor women contestants forced to pick grapes in the cold, shovel coal, and clean out stables! Methinks I can predict now the end of the series - he's going to admit he's not a millionaire, and the "winning" lady will brain him with a shovel.

My brother pointed out that a lot of these contestants are probably would-be stars, hoping to be recognized, and thriving on the exposure.

The finale is next week, and they're bringing back all the girls to get mad at Evan. Hehehe, I can't wait.
