7/11/11 Z's Journal: Novemeber Challege : ARGH too much work
Z Started conversation Nov 7, 2011
The world wasn't to know that I entered November feeling already totally exhausted, and just needing a break. I'd just popped up and work every day looking like nothing was wrong.
I don't mention h2g2 at work. The fact that I wore myself out saving a website is a shameful little secret.
And suddenly I'm too tired to do my job. Well not to tired to turn up every day and do it, but too tired to stay up until 1am working, and to pop in and the weekend and get more done then. I should be doing all this, that's what's expecting. But I'm not. I'm tired and I need to sleep.
But there will be no sleep, there are two big deadlines coming up, two big interesting, exciting deadlines, that I'm really enjoying the work for. Or I would be if my brain wasn't on a go-slow.
I'm aware that the volunteers going on and on about how hard we worked to save h2g2 must get a tad annoying. Or worse still look like we're fishing for compliments, or expecting people to do as we say for evermore. I don't believe that's true. I have no right to demand that my view of 'the way h2g2 should be' holds more weight than anyone elses.
I could say 'I didn't save h2g2, for people to insult each other', or 'I didn't save h2g2 for you to all have flame war', or 'I didn't save h2g2 for people to write boring entries in Peer Review'. But none of it would be true. We saved h2g2 because of all of those things, ultimately what motivated us all to save h2g2 was because we loved it. (I feel the need point out that the 'we' includes Robbie, Brian and Aly in this, as they all did an awful lot, just as much as the rest of us).
Do I mind if people use h2g2 for things I don't really enjoy? No. Not really.
And if I you ever catch me saying 'I didn't save h2g2 for you to XXXXX' please slap me.

I wouldn't hold it against you if you did any of those things. And a sincere thanks for saving the site. I for one, really appreciate it.

If you need sleep, you must sleep.
You're a doctor, you know that you can work on pure adrenaline for a long time, but when the pressure (OK, some of it...) is off, you really must have a break!
One night of resting will make the rest of the work possible.
Which reminds me of a slogan:
"Coffee! Lets you do stupid things faster!"
Sleep takes the stupid away, and lets you do it right, and faster without coffee. Sleep, man!
