*waiting with baited breath for the news*

I'm still confused about when a doctor ceases to be Dr. So-'n-So and becomes Mr. And why? Since any male qualifies for the title Mr., why is it considered more appropriate? Or am I totally mistaken about the whole thing?

You really know how to confuse a non-English-speaker, Hyp smiley - laugh. Now I absolutely don't understand what you all are talking about. But I do understand how to keep my fingers crossed smiley - goodluck.
I just hope that is what is required.

tartaronne, I am not surprised you re confused. In the UK when a Doctor climbs the career ladder, say to become a surgeon or specialist, he is titled 'Mr.' Don't ask me why. Perhaps Z can enlighten us.

It is about as confusing as what are called Public Schools actually being private schools as opposed to state schools. Oh, I give up. If we start discussing the peculiarities of the English language we shall be here all day, and still be none the wisersmiley - biggrin

Z, goodness, time does fly doesn't it. Congratulations smiley - applause and smiley - goodluck. I don't suppose you can tell us where you will be based? I seem to recollect you were in my neck of the woods (Central England) at one time.

smiley - cheers

I think surgeons are given the title "Mr" because originally they were barber/surgeons, who weren't medically qualified.

Much as I *hate* to disapoint you as I have the manual dexterity of a snail I'm actually doing my Membership of the Royal College of Physcians, rather than surgeons. This means I'll get to keep the title Dr, but add letters MRCP after my name.

Anyway the exam wasn't too bad at all I don't know if I passed it, but I think I got a respectable fail. Considering only 30% of people pass it's not that bad to fail.

In the Uk MRCS members of the royal college of Surgeons call themselves Mr, for complex historical reasons which are explained here: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/321/7276/1589
