Nevertheless, good luck Z.

Great link. smiley - ok If only I'd had all that information to hand back at school when trying to 'big up' my surgeon dad to other kids who said "he can't be a proper doctor if he's called Mr M".

No. You can only be James Bond's boss with a name like that.

Thanks for the explanation. It makes more sense to me now.

Surgeons are certainly highly respected in the US. They seem to be the superstars at the hospitals. Not the general surgeons as much as the specialists. Doing open heart surgery or brain surgery puts them in a different league than the ones who do toenails and gall bladders. But having had both done - the toenails and gall bladder - I was thrilled to have both problems taken care of.

MC - sorry that kids didn't believe you. In a hospital many patients seem to assume that any senior Dr ourght to be called Mr!

What's really odd is that if you are a Dr, but not a MRCS you can't technically use the title Mr any more.

For instance if I went up to someone, introduced myself as Mr and told they needed an operation they could assume that I had reached a certain level of training in Surgery.

We had one surgical trainee who used Mr without the qualifications and got into serious trouble.

I'm assuming I'm not doing anything terrible by not being bothered to change the title on my credit cards yet!

Suregons can be called Dr if the want to be, most women surgeons find that if they introduce themselves as 'Miss/Mrs So and So' the patients assume they're a nurse, so often keep the title Dr.
