Got aphone call today from the Department for Work and pensions, offering me a job. As of the 20th of June, I will be a civil servant.

Well done!
Of course, if they hadn't offered you a job, then they would have failed in their mission as the Department for Work and Pensions. It would be the worst kind of double standards for the DWP not to offer people either work or a pension.
And isn't "civil servant" an odd expression?

Got another phone call on Wednesday telling me that there's been a bit of a cock-up and could I start on the 13th rather than the 20th. So I said yes. And will now start Monday next week.
