As I've already mentioned in this here journal, i finished university late, only receiving confirmation of my degree iN September rather than June as usual. As a result of this and my degree certificate arriving in the post, I presumed I wouldn't be getting a graduation ceremony.
Well, i presumed wrong, and my opportunity to wear a robe and ludicrous hat will come on the 7th December 2004, when I have my graduation ceremonmy at the Stadium of Light, the Sunderland AFC football ground.
Which is nice.

Graduation at a football ground? The mind boggles...
"Sing when you're matriculating, you only sing when you're matriculating"
"You're not studying, you're not studying, you're not studying any more!"
"Who's the bstd in the gown?"
"Are you the University of Teeside in disguise?"
"Where were you when you were thick?"
"PhD? You're having a laugh!"
And repeat to fade....

I should point out that the graduatiuon will be in the satadium's ceremony suite, rather than actually on the pitch. Apparently they normally do it at the Empire Theatre but that's shut for refurbishment, and rather than use the smaller Royalty theatre, which is opposite a students' favourite pub (The Royalty Pub), they'd hold it in one of the country's top five football stadia (home of one of the country's top fifty teams...)
And I didn't know until I got the graduation ceremony brouchure that the University's chancellor is Lord (David) Puttnam, the filmmaker.

I had the ecremony last tuesday, got my opportunity to wear a silly hat and gown combination, consumed a sizable quantity of Sunderland AFC champagne, etc, etc. It was fun.

I used to like the old *BS* before they changed it to *BSc*. Presumably due to the universal opinion that it stood for male bovine excrement and the subsequent *PHD* stood for Piled High and Deep.
But if they chose to aknowledge you as an Artistic Batchelor, more power you!

I have an MPhil, which makes me a Master of Philosophy.
If I'd done Astrophysics, would that have made me a Master of the Universe?
Key: Complain about this post
