This has been an interesting school year so far--and school's only been in session for 2 months. (For those that don't know, I'm a part-time instructional assistant in a special education class in a local elementary school. The students range in age from 5 to 11--kindergarteners to 5th graders.)
We started the year with a new teacher, which was expected. My mantra the first week of school, repeated several times to the students, was, "Different teachers do things different ways." Things seemed to be settling down nicely the second week, so I didn't think there'd be any problems as I left for the retreat I go to every year, which meant I was gone on the second Friday of the school year. When I came back at 10:30 the next Monday (I work from 10:30 to 2:00) the principal was in the room, and we had a substitute teacher. I didn't think much of it, since the teacher had been having health problems--until I heard that she had just gathered her things and walked out.
The next few weeks were full of uncertainty--while we did have the consistancy of having the same sub for nearly a month, there was no one applying for the teaching position. There were a few options being discussed, such as the other aid in the class, who's been there for 20 years and has done everything except the paperwork bits of running a special ed class (and is familiar with IEPs anyway, from the other end) take the test to allow her to be a substitute teacher, while she took classes to allow her to be certified to be a full time teacher. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, we did receive a teacher--the teacher that had been hired as a resource teacher, agreed to run the special ed class as well as the resource program. Now that the uncertainty is out of the air, things are starting to settle into routine, and it's so much easier.

It is disturbing for the children when this happens. My daughter El had a year when she had four teachers, including one who walked out like yours.
