You're exploring a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, when you hear 'boc boc boc boc buh-GAWK!' You shrug, thinking that either you're hearing things, or else someone has their TV up rather loud. You continue exploring, and stop to admire an adorable playhouse. Out of which comes a... chicken? It's shaped like a chicken, but they don't come multicolor, do they? And what's that two-legged puffball following it out? And that tumbleweed with feet?
Backyard chicken keeping has grown lately. At one time, most families kept a few chickens--in the US, there were even posters extolling the practice of poultry keeping, saying Uncle Sam wanted families to do so. In the decades between then and the recent resurgence, chicken keeping was considered the province of big agriculture, family farms, and poor peopleHa! Have you priced chicken feed lately?, and certainly not something to be done in urban areas--most certainly not where affluent people may be.

Not sure how Pliny's going to handle that footnote--just in case, the "Ha! ...lately?" bit is a footnote

Hm, looks like I'll need to either use different brackets for footnote tags in journals, or *gasp* actually try to write with no footnotes! Or I suppose I could insert footnotes when I compile things at the end of the month, but the asides just happen when I'm writing--I'm not sure I can go back and insert.

There's no way of doing actual footnotes in a journal because it is a conversation, not an entry. Just stick your comments in square brackets and we'll know what you mean.

I think it would be intimidating to reach the end of a post and find oneself ankle-deep in footnotes.

Gnomon--Yes, that's what I thought, but I decided to try it, anyway
paul--But lots of footnotes/asides is my style Heck, there've been times that the footnotes make for better reading than my actual content

I was just trying to be corny with foot puns, Amy. Ankle-deep, footnotes, etc. My style is arch, I try to stay instep with people. I try to go toe to toe.

I think Amy should be the sole judge of such an approach.
