Jeff and Crystal Butterfly, Jofrog is using webTV so she can't see the reply buttons. That's why she couldn't reply to you. She can only post new conversations unless someone provides a reply link for her.

I'd suggest leaving all the details you have (like version of WebTV, the pages in question , etc) about the problem on the Known Issues with Browsers page http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A187292, and hopefully someone will rectify the issue. I know that really isn't much help, but at the moment I can't come up with any more useful suggestions. Sorry.

Hello jofrog :-) I think the problem just comes down to net congestion. From previous evidence it looks as if you have a slower than average connection and, due to Sept 11th, the BBC servers have been very overloaded for the past couple of months. h2g2 pages are built on-the-fly from a kit of bits fitted into one of several templates. For example, a user page is made up of five pieces all of which have to be fetched and assembled. At times of heavy traffic the potential for an incomplete download is immense. There's not much we can do about the BBC end of things. Presumably they will wait to see if the increase in traffic is sustained and, if so, will then do something about their hardware but nothing is likely to alleviate the problem in the short term. You might have a go at your cable company. Something is not right there - other webTV users receive the reply button so I don't see why you shouldn't. Tell them that your connection is too slow. All you can do is to try to force the page to reload from the server so that all the components are picked up afresh. On a PC this means pressing the 'refresh" button in the brower toolbar but for WebTV you may have to "go round the houses" - repeat a sequence of links to see if the final page loads properly this time. Amy the (Guru) Ant Here's your reply link :-) http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F73320?thread=131110&post=1495782#p1495782

I Doubt that, Amy, because when I was on the WebTV system (Am I allowed to mention the name? It's nickname is Smelly-pest.. cockney rhyming slang, even though It's not the biggest cable company in London smiley - smiley) The pages would not load, and espcially past posting 20 or 30 in forums, i would get the header of the page and then the busy light on my web box would freeze instead of flashing to show it had frozen, and then you'd have to un plug it, plug it back in and fiddle about with it a little...

(By the way, the header is the bbc online [now our brilliant h2g2!] logo all the way to the right.. and then nothing.. smiley - erm)

and Jofrog's reply link was a link the the posting you posted!

How? What happened? Are you on a computer? I don't believe everything can go right for a change using a tv browser.. They're just not designed to work! smiley - biggrin Have fun with the smileys and stuff, Jofrog, and Amy, My theory on why webtv has problems is because its cheap for intance, "Smellywest" buy in their equipment for a third of what they charge for it if ever broken; £300, and £12.50 for a remote control, £29.99 for a keyboard; when they buy in all their equipment so cheap, and don't spend time fixing it.. is my theory.. the webtv conmpanies are too tight with their cash smiley - biggrin
