A Conversation for Confusion between Words Used in English and German

Here is another - "fixer"

When I visited Germany as a small boy, I told everyone I met that my Opa (grandfather) was a good "fixer" because he always helped me fix my toys.

Unfortunately, in German (or at least Berliner) slang, "fixer" means a drug-dealer (to organise a "fix").

Several years later, I returned to Germany, and got into a similar fix (sorry - couldn't help myself!) by asking for "Coke" at milk bars. In Berlin, "coke" is specifically cocaine, "cola" is what you drink. Very embarassing.

Oh, I always thought a 'fixer' was a user. Tstststst...

Hey, how about giving yourself a name (rather than a number) and 'unlocking' your personal page? There's a 'Preferences' link somewhere and there's an 'Edit Personal Space' link somewhere else on it.
